What is Nitric Oxide and how does it work in our body? Nitric oxide is also known as nitrogen monoxide in more scientific terms and can also be written as NO.

It is a diatomic gas found in many mammals with many cell signaling effects. In humans NO is important for its role as a cellular messenger to many physiological and pathological processes.

This substance can often be confused with N2O Nitrous Oxide, and NO2 Nitro Dioxide which both wouldn’t be good for us. NO2 is toxic and dangerous.

One of the main jobs for NO is to increase blood flow and dilate blood vessels, making it a potent supplement for many bodybuilders and athletes wanting to increase performance.

Any supplement claiming to be a NO supplement will include L-Arginine, the amino acid responsible for producing the NO gas. Bodybuilders will take L-Arginine to increase pump and blood-flow to the muscles and get the “pump” feeling.

Recent studies have found that it may not show as much of an increase in human growth hormone as once thought, so taking only L-Arganine for growth hormone responses may not be the best reason to ingest it. When L-Arganine however was combined with BCAA (branched chain amino acids) and glutamine, among other amino acids it showed great improvement in the body.

NO is sent to the stomach after a big meal and will help digest food. It may also increase your heart rate while exercising, and lower blood pressure when resting.

If training for the “pump effect” you may get disappointed to know that the effects are usually temporary and once blood flow stops hitting the muscles your veins may come back down to a normal level. Does nitric oxide supplementation have any side effects?

What is nitric oxide really?

A miracle drug or pill? Not really, just something that’s naturally occurring in your body all the time, and you are simply artificially increasing it when taking a supplement.

The whole process is complicated, but a longer workout will dilate the blood vessels longer as your NO concentrations increase in the blood.

Check out my No Explode Review to learn more about the NO-supplement I use to this day. The first one I tried and was happy with it, besides a few fidgeting fingers at times because of the caffeine.
